What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin, swelling and fat bags. This will reduce eye fatigue, watery eyes, and sometimes headaches, while giving your face a more youthful appearance. One advantage of this treatment is that it is outpatient only, performed under local anaesthesia, and for upper lid blepharoplasty leaves a hardly noticeable scar in the natural crease of the eyelids. Lower lid blepharoplasty leaves a small scar under the lower eyelashes.
Minor procedure, major change
Blepharoplasty can focus only on the upper or lower lids. Many patients have both upper and lower lid corrections, however. Although blepharoplasty is considered a minor procedure, it can have remarkable effects in making the face appear more youthful. For this reason patients often combine an eyelid treatment with another procedure such as liposuction, breast augmentation or breast reduction. Blepharoplasty is also often performed along with facelift for a combined rejuvenating effect.

What to expect
1.Before the operation
For two weeks before the procedure avoid aspirin and other blood thinners. Minimise alcohol consumption and smoking for a few days before the procedure. Ideally you should stop smoking completely. You do not have to stop taking hormonal contraception before the procedure
2.During the operation
Blepharoplasty takes place under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure; patients do not need to remain overnight in the clinic. One eyelid usually takes about 20 minutes. The length of the stay at the clinic will depend on the scope. After the procedure you will have the opportunity to rest at the clinic. You can take a sedative before the procedure begins, if you wish.
3.Post-operation
Minor swelling may appear after the procedure, but it should disappear relatively quickly. We recommend using cold compresses to speed up the healing process. Swelling and haematomas usually subside within seven to 10 days. Patients should avoid physical activity for three to five days. Ordinary activities can resume after one week.

Blepharoplasty is one of the more minor cosmetic procedures available, as it does not require general anaesthesia and can be performed in under an hour. The surgeon will go over the incision size with you during the clinical examination, including drawing it on your skin. The incision is made in a way that the scars remain hidden in the natural folds on the skin or under the lower eyelashes. After the procedure, incisions are closed with small stitches.
How long do blepharoplasty results last?
The results are usually long-term and last several years. It is important to remember, however, that we cannot stop the ageing process entirely and physical changes may appear after some time.
