What is abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is usually performed as a result of pregnancy or major weight loss. The horizontal incision leaves a scar that can be easily hidden under the underwear line.

Surgical techniques for abdominoplasty often vary widely. The scope required to achieve excellent results depends on factors such as the degree of sagging in the abdominal walls. In most cases the surgeon will remove overhanging skin by tightening the upper and lower abdomen. Some clients may do well with a mini abdominoplasty to remove overhanging skin in the lower abdomen only, below the navel. Either way the scar will fall below the underwear line. Often the abdomen area has both excess skin and excess fat disrupting the body’s natural proportions, in which case the surgeon can perform liposuction on the abdomen and hips to remove excess fat. A protruding abdomen may be caused by diastasis recti, a separation in the abdominal muscles. This can be corrected during an abdominoplasty by reconnecting the separated muscles to achieve a flat abdomen.
The surgeon may also recommend a combination of abdominoplasty and liposuction in nearby areas to achieve the best results. The most common supporting procedures include liposuction of the abdomen (upper and lower) and liposuction of the hips.

What to expect
1.Before the operation
For two weeks before the procedure avoid aspirin and other blood thinners. Minimise alcohol consumption and smoking for a few days before the procedure. Ideally you should stop smoking completely. You do not have to stop taking hormonal contraception before the procedure.
2.During the operation
Abdominoplasty takes place under full anaesthesia and requires an inpatient stay afterwards. The length of the stay at the clinic will depend on the scope of the procedure. You can take a sedative before the procedure begins, if you wish.
3.Post-operation
Post-operative care is highly important after abdominoplasty and has a fundamental impact on achieving satisfactory results. You should rest as much as possible for the first few days. Pain can be managed with painkillers. Swelling and haematomas usually subside within seven to 10 days. Patients should avoid physical activity for seven days.

What is the difference between abdominoplasty and mini abdominoplasty?
Traditional abdominoplasty lifts the upper and lower abdomen, which requires repositioning the navel. Mini abdominoplasty does not reposition the navel.
When does abdominoplasty require a T-incision?
If the skin is not stretched downwards only, but also from side to side, a horizontal incision will not typically be sufficient. In order to remove excess skin vertically as well, the surgeon will make a vertical incision at the navel line. This anchor-shaped incision is often made in patients who have lost a great deal of weight.
Can the surgeon correct older scars on the abdomen during abdominoplasty?
