What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to correct excessive size and sometimes asymmetry of the breasts. In addition to psychological distress and limitations in physical activity and sports, overly large breasts often cause long-term pain as well. They put immense strain on the spine, with pain often radiating to the neck, shoulders and arms.
Breast lift with reduction
Breast reduction often brings clients great physical and mental relief. What to expect
1.Before the operation
For two weeks before the operation avoid aspirin and other blood thinners. Discontinue hormonal contraception at least three weeks before the operation. Minimise alcohol consumption and smoking for a few days before the procedure. Ideally you should stop smoking completely. If you are over 40, please go for a mammogram or ultrasound.
2.During the operation
Breast reduction takes place under general anaesthesia and requires a one or two-day stay at the clinic. The anaesthesiologist remains present during the entire procedure. The surgeon makes the breast lift incision based on the nature of the procedure and achieves the desired reduction in volume by removing fat tissue. Most patients also agree on a reduction in areola size as well. You can take a sedative before the procedure begins, if you wish.
3.Post-operation
You may experience mild pain in the first few days, which can be easily managed with medication for pain relief. Keep to strict bed rest for the first week; you can return to work after two or three weeks depending on the type of work involved. You will need to wear a special wire-free compression bra for two weeks.

At what age can breast reduction be performed?
This procedure is not recommended for girls under the age of 18, as their breasts may not be finished growing and re-operation may be necessary. There is no upper age limit, however, so it would come down to the patient’s overall health.
How major of a procedure is breast reduction?
Breast reduction takes two to three hours and requires general anaesthesia as well as avoiding physical activity for at least two weeks. The surgeon usually makes an incision in the shape of an anchor, i.e. around the areola, down to the crease under the breast, and horizontally along the crease. Next the surgeon removes excess tissue and tightens the skin on the breast. Breast reduction involves breast lift at the same time.
How long do breast reduction results last?
In most cases breast reduction offers permanent results. In some cases the breasts may begin sagging somewhat over time. It is important to remember, however, that we cannot stop the ageing process entirely and physical changes may appear after some time. Following all the surgeon’s recommendations, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and genetics are the best factors involved in making sure you heal well, get the results you want and have them last as long as possible.
Can I go for regular mammograms?
Yes, you definitely can. You can inform your doctor of your procedure before the examination.
Does breast reduction increase the risk of cancer?
No connection between breast reduction and cancer has been shown.
