What is sleeve gastrectomy?
Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that removes about 85% of stomach volume. The remaining part of the stomach is made into a sleeve connected to the oesophagus, limiting the size of portions you can eat. The reduction of appetite and food intake will help you lose a great deal of weight. To be effective, the procedure also requires a change of lifestyle, eating habits and exercise.

Sleeve gastrectomy reduces production of ghrelin, often called the hunger hormone, as production takes place mainly in the part of the stomach removed in the surgery. This helps you get accustomed to new eating habits with much smaller portion sizes. The procedure can provide a number of other benefits, however. What to expect
1.Before the operation
For two weeks before the treatment avoid aspirin and other blood thinners. Minimise alcohol consumption and smoking for a few days before the procedure. Ideally you should stop smoking completely.
2.During the operation
Sleeve gastrectomy takes place under full anaesthesia. It requires a four to five-day stay at the clinic. The anaesthesiologist remains present during the entire operation. You can take a sedative before the procedure begins, if you wish.
3.Post-operation
You will be on a liquid diet for the first two weeks, then a mixed diet for the next two weeks. After a month you can eat regular food again, provided that it is healthy and balanced. The amount of food you can eat will be much smaller than before the operation. Most importantly, you will need to keep to a weight-loss diet that is low in fat and high in protein and vitamins. You will also need to drink at least one to one and a half litres of water per day.
